Verbal Expressiveness

B12 Communication
Core LayerMML-2

Version v1.3.2

Definition

The capacity to express thoughts clearly and richly in language: to formulate, explain, connect ideas, choose precise wording, and maintain coherence.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Low verbal expressiveness: speech is sparse or fragmented; thoughts are hard to articulate; explanations are short and poorly structured.

High Pole

Speech is rich and precise; complex ideas are explained clearly with structure.

Reference

Expressiveness is solid in familiar domains; becomes simpler and less precise in new ones.

Measure

Formulation precision and coherence under time constraints.

Measuring Methods

• Explain a complex text “in your own words” → accuracy and structure.
• Teach a concept to a non-expert → clarity.
• Speech analysis: coherence markers, examples, logical links.

Empirical Anchor

Verbal fluency (Lezak et al., 2004); verbal expressiveness / linguistic output rate; extraversion — talkativeness.

Notes

• Distinct from charisma (Derived): expressiveness can be high without magnetism.
• Risks at MIN: professional/social invisibility.
• Risks at MAX: over-elaboration; “verbal overbuild.”
