Definition

The capacity to hold an audience’s attention and manage delivery dynamics through voice, pacing, structure, state control, and contact.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Attention drops; delivery is flat, chaotic, or poorly regulated.

High Pole

Sustains attention with strong pacing, clarity, and controlled presence.

Reference

Works in small groups; weaker on large stages or recordings.

Measure

Primary: Engagement Stability — how steadily audience attention remains across the talk.

Measuring Methods

Segmented ratings over time + behavioral indicators (questions, recall) under standardized topics.

Empirical Anchor

Public speaking presence / communication apprehension inverse (McCroskey, 1977); presentation skill; speaker credibility (Hovland et al., 1953).

Notes

Distinct from charisma: public speaking is process control; charisma is baseline pull.
