Definition

A tendency to speak bluntly and immediately: naming things as they are, delivering critical feedback with minimal cushioning.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Indirectness: speaks indirectly; hints, softens, avoids direct formulations.

High Pole

Speaks very directly; minimal softening; fast to the point.

Reference

Moderately direct: speaks plainly on essentials while tracking relationship and context.

Measure

Cushioning degree in critical messages (how much “buffer” is added).

Measuring Methods

• Feedback-phrase analysis: blunt vs. softened formulations.
• “Deliver bad news” scenarios → style choice.
• Peer feedback: perceived bluntness/indirectness.

Empirical Anchor

Directness / communication directness; low-context vs high-context communication (Hall, 1976); assertiveness — frankness component.

Notes

• Distinct from honesty: directness is delivery style; honesty is truthfulness of content/intent.
• Risks at MIN: ambiguity, passive aggression.
• Risks at MAX: hurtful communication; conflict escalation.
