Definition

The ability to adapt communication to context: tone, humor, distance, pace, formality, and what is appropriate here-and-now.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Low social calibration: frequent misfires: too harsh/too soft/too close; violates context and generates tension.

High Pole

Fine calibration: adjusts tone, distance, and structure with subtlety.

Reference

Strong within familiar cultures/environments; error-prone in new ones.

Measure

Context-miss frequency (inappropriate tone/joke/distance) as reflected by feedback.

Measuring Methods

• Observation across contexts (formal/informal) → misfires.
• Peer feedback: perceived “inappropriateness” frequency.
• Scenario shifts: how style changes with audience status.

Empirical Anchor

Social calibration / social skill (Riggio, 1986); pragmatic competence; sociolinguistic sensitivity.

Notes

• Distinct from politeness: one can be polite and still inappropriate.
• Risks at MIN: exclusion, recurring social conflict.
• Risks at MAX: over-adaptation; loss of naturalness.
