Version v1.2.4

Definition

The ability to detect another person’s emotional state and respond in a way that accurately reflects and appropriately accounts for it.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Emotions are frequently misread; responses miss tone and timing.

High Pole

Emotional states are read precisely; responses are well-calibrated and supportive.

Reference

Strong with close others; weaker with strangers or during conflict.

Measure

Primary: Accuracy — correctness of emotion identification (type and intensity) relative to ground truth.

Measuring Methods

Standardized stimuli (clips, scenarios, voice) + validation via target self-report and/or expert coding; control for culture.

Empirical Anchor

Empathy as integrated skill / empathic accuracy (Ickes, 1997); empathy as multidimensional (Davis, 1983); IRI scale.

Notes

Distinct from perspective taking: empathy targets affect; perspective taking targets goals and constraints.
