Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Self-soothing deficit: self-calming is difficult; emotions “stick”; external support or distracting stimuli are often needed.
Reliable self-calming: the person can reduce arousal through cognition, breath, action, routines, reappraisal.
Works in most situations, but stronger triggers require more time and/or others’ help.
Measure
Measuring Methods
• Mild standardized stress tasks with recovery tracking.
• Observation: does functioning return without external regulation?
Empirical Anchor
Notes
• Risks at MIN: conflict cycles, dependence on external regulators.
• Risks at MAX: emotional over-suppression; bypassing important experience.
