Definition

The capacity to model how a situation looks from another person’s position, including their goals, constraints, and rationale.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Projects one’s own lens onto others; motives are misattributed.

High Pole

Builds a realistic internal model even when the other view is uncomfortable or foreign.

Reference

Works in calm discussion; degrades under resentment or attack.

Measure

Primary: Accuracy — match between inferred goals/motives and what the other person confirms or demonstrates.

Measuring Methods

Case protocols: infer/predict the other’s choice → compare with actual choice or validated self-report.

Empirical Anchor

Perspective taking (Davis, 1983); theory of mind applied (Premack & Woodruff, 1978); social cognition.

Notes

Can exist without warmth; it is a cognitive model, not an affective bond.
