Definition

The ability to produce and interpret context-appropriate humor with social and semantic sensitivity.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Poor humor detection; jokes are off-target or socially miscalibrated.

High Pole

Strong context sense; humor strengthens connection and meaning.

Reference

Generally humorous, but occasionally misses audience or context.

Measure

Primary: Timing.
Secondary: Social fit (appropriateness and relational impact).

Measuring Methods

Contextual scenarios → evaluate humor comprehension/production and audience response.

Empirical Anchor

Humor craft / humor production ability (Feingold & Mazzella, 1991); humor styles — benign production (Martin et al., 2003).

Notes

Not merely verbal quickness; context calibration matters more. Distinct from C090Social Humor Use (which is tendency to use humor; this is skill/craft).
