Definition

Speed of detecting an error and correcting behavior without prolonged drift in the wrong mode.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Late error detection; repeated wrong execution before correction.

High Pole

Near-immediate detection and correction; fast return to correct performance.

Reference

Corrects, but with delay and extra repetitions.

Measure

Primary: Recovery.
Secondary: Latency (time-to-correction onset).

Measuring Methods

Trap/error-injection tasks → measure time/trials to detection and correction.

Empirical Anchor

Rapid error correction / online error monitoring (Rabbitt, 1966); error detection and correction speed; post-error slowing.

Notes

Narrower than D046: this is “fix now,” not necessarily “extract a general lesson.”
