Definition

The ability to convert errors and feedback into concrete behavioral updates rather than defensiveness, rationalization, or collapse.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Repeats errors; dismisses or distorts feedback; weak behavioral updating.

High Pole

Detects error, isolates cause, updates rule/strategy, and consolidates the correction.

Reference

Corrects, but updates are not always retained across time or contexts.

Measure

Primary: Recovery (return to correct performance after an error).
Secondary: Error rate (recurrence frequency).

Measuring Methods

Feedback-rich tasks → measure trials/time-to-stable correction and recurrence rate.

Empirical Anchor

Error utilization / learning from failure (Sitkin, 1992; Edmondson, 2011); error management (Keith & Frese, 2005).

Notes

Broader than D061: here the focus is on learning from error, not merely “fixing it quickly.”
