Definition

Discipline of reasoning: clear definitions, explicit assumptions, valid inference, and resistance to sloppy logic.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Vague concepts; inference leaps; inconsistent standards of proof.

High Pole

Explicit assumptions; structurally valid arguments; reliable detection of fallacies and gaps.

Reference

Rigorous in simple problems; gaps appear under complexity or pressure.

Measure

Primary: Coherence (structural integrity of reasoning).
Secondary: Accuracy (correctness of conclusions/estimates).

Measuring Methods

Argument and case analysis → assumption extraction → validity checks and conclusion accuracy.

Empirical Anchor

Analytical rigor / analytical thinking; critical thinking skills (Watson & Glaser, 1964); logical reasoning ability.

Notes

Not the same as D052 (Mental Clarity): clarity can exist without rigor, and rigor can be expressed unclearly.
