Definition

Ability to design processes, tools, and routines that fit the task and constraints, improving stable performance.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Chaotic workflow; method mismatches task; high friction and waste.

High Pole

Builds effective workflows; chooses tools well; reduces friction and error systematically.

Reference

Has a method but adapts it slowly as conditions change.

Measure

Primary: Coherence (workflow integrity).
Secondary: Cost (time/energy price of the method).

Measuring Methods

Workflow mapping → bottleneck analysis → outcome vs cost assessment.

Empirical Anchor

Working method design / work process optimization; deliberate practice structure (Ericsson et al., 1993).

Notes

Not the same as decomposition (D050): this is process engineering, not task splitting.
