Definition

Ability to drop outdated beliefs or automatisms quickly when new evidence warrants revision.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Clings to prior models; slow updating; defensive belief protection.

High Pole

Rapid belief/strategy updating; low ego-defensiveness in revision.

Reference

Updates, but typically only after strong evidence pressure.

Measure

Primary: Flexibility.
Secondary: Inertia (resistance to shifting state/strategy).

Measuring Methods

Contradictory-evidence tasks → measure revision latency and behavioral update.

Empirical Anchor

Unlearning capacity / cognitive flexibility in belief revision; belief updating; proactive interference resolution.

Notes

Intellectual Openness (D038) can be present without fast unlearning; this is specifically revision speed and depth.
