Version v1.2.4

Definition

A durable belief in one’s ability to cope with tasks of varying difficulty, shaping persistence, goal choice, and resilience to setbacks.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Expectancy of failure: avoids challenge, quits early, heavily dependent on external structure and reassurance.

High Pole

Robust coping belief: selects harder goals, persists through setbacks, treats errors as part of improvement.

Reference

Strong in familiar domains, collapses in novel or ambiguous contexts.

Measure

Stability: how well efficacy belief holds after errors and negative feedback.
• Threshold: level of novelty/difficulty that reliably breaks efficacy.

Measuring Methods

Tiered challenge tasks; analysis of goal selection; longitudinal response to setbacks; external ratings of coping behavior.

Empirical Anchor

Self-efficacy (Bandura, 1977); generalized self-efficacy (Schwarzer & Jerusalem, 1995).

Notes

Close to outcome expectation, but self-efficacy is “I can handle it,” not “the world will reward me.”
