Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Self-punishment or shame-freeze dominates; internal attack blocks learning and re-engagement.
Clear-eyed kindness toward self: acknowledges error, preserves self-worth, repairs behavior without collapse or denial.
Present in ordinary setbacks, but major failures trigger either self-attack or defensive rationalization.
Measure
• Recovery: speed of return to learning and corrective action.
