Version v1.2.4

Definition

The ability to preserve calm behavioral control in emotionally charged contexts, avoiding reactive escalation.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Easily “snaps”: tone, gestures, and decisions become reactive; self-interruption is weak once escalation starts.

High Pole

Stable self-control under provocation: remains clear, steady, and constructive while holding boundaries.

Reference

Generally controlled, but fatigue or strong status/relationship threats rapidly destabilize behavior.

Measure

Stability: consistency of controlled behavior in conflict/pressure moments.
• Latency: how quickly reactive escalation appears under provocation.

Measuring Methods

Behavioral observation in conflict simulations; standardized reactivity ratings; 360 feedback; analysis of real high-stakes interactions.

Empirical Anchor

Composure / emotional stability under pressure; poise; grace under fire construct in military/sport psychology.

Notes

Distinct from D019Emotional Self-Regulation: D018 is about behavioral control; D019 is about modulating emotional intensity/expression.
