Version v2.2

Definition

Temporary inability to feel or resonate emotionally; a protective wall with outward composure.

Mechanism

Affective output blocked as protective response; emotional processing goes offline while functional competence preserved.

Typical Entry Conditions

• After emotionally overwhelming events (trauma, intense conflict, chronic exposure)
• When emotional expression is unsafe (social threat, high evaluation, coercive contexts)
• During sustained caregiving/pressure where feeling becomes “too costly”
• As a defense against shame, grief, or fear overload

Phenomenology

• Reduced emotional resonance: “I know I should feel, but nothing reaches me”
• Flattened facial/voice tone; constrained emotional vocabulary
• Empathy may feel muted; interpersonal warmth drops
• Often coexists with functional competence (outward composure)

Signature Dynamics

C043Emotional Expressiveness ↓ → affective output blocked
C059Affective Empathy ↓ → emotional resonance drops
D108Emotional Containment ↑ → protective wall actively constructed

Secondary Dynamics

C039 ↓, C060 ↓, C061 ↓, C051 ↓, D099

Emotional Correlates

Entry: E002Anxiety ↑↑, E019Shame ↑, E020Guilt
During: (muted — that is the signature)
Exit: E014Sadness ↑↑, E005Relief

Measure

PRIMARY AXIS: Duration (how long the affective block persists). SECONDARY: Intensity (depth of emotional suppression), Threshold (what level of emotional load triggers it).

Typical Exit Direction

Safety restoration → gradual affect re-entry via low-stimulus reconnection (sensory grounding, body-based cues, trusted contact).

Risks & Misreads

• Misread as coldness or indifference → relationship damage
• Forcing “big feelings” can increase defensive blocking
• Can hide untreated grief/trauma processes

Chronicity Note

Frequent recurrence suggests trait-level low C043Emotional Expressiveness or chronic safety deficit. If persistent, overlaps with clinical dissociative patterns.

Empirical Anchor

Emotional numbing in PTSD (Litz & Gray, 2002); alexithymia-like transient states; peritraumatic dissociation.

Notes

Can coexist with Q001 (shutdown) or Q006/Q007 (high performance); signature is affective blocking. Not a trait; episodes vary strongly by context and safety.
