Emotional LayerMML-1

Version v2.0

Definition

An episodic anticipatory threat response elicited by uncertain, ambiguous, or hard-to-control risk, biasing attention toward threat monitoring, precautionary behavior, and risk-avoidant decision-making.

Mechanism

Uncertainty-driven monitoring loop activates; threat-detection runs without clear target, consuming attentional bandwidth for precaution.

Trigger–Appraisal–Function

• Trigger: Ambiguous, uncertain, or hard-to-control risk (future-oriented).
• Appraisal: Threat possible but not fully specified; vigilance seems necessary.
• Function: Increase monitoring and precaution to prevent harm.

Observable Output

• Precautionary behavior (checking, avoidance) without clear immediate threat.
• Attention captured by threat possibilities and safety signals.
• Tension/restlessness; difficulty fully disengaging from monitoring.
• Decision bias toward risk-avoidance and ‘just in case’ actions.

Episode Profile

Onset: minutes (often gradual). Peak: builds with uncertainty; spikes with new cues. Duration: minutes–hours. Recovery: downshifts when uncertainty resolves; may linger as vigilance. KEY METRIC: time in anxious monitoring; avoidance cost.

Dysregulation Risk

Reassurance loops and over-monitoring that maintain uncertainty salience; anxiety about anxiety creates self-sustaining cycles.

Change Potential

Regulation Trainability = High. Susceptibility Shift = Medium–High (sleep/stress, uncertainty-tolerance training, environment predictability).

Empirical Anchor

Generalized anxiety construct (Barlow, 2002); intolerance of uncertainty model (Dugas et al., 1998); worry as cognitive avoidance (Borkovec, 1994).
