Version v1.2.4

Definition

A drive toward high goals, larger scale, and recognition; an inclination to raise the bar above the contextual norm.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Low appetite for high-stakes goals; avoids scale and competition unless externally pushed.

High Pole

Consistently chooses “bigger games,” often accepting higher load and risk for higher ceiling outcomes.

Reference

Wants growth, but selects it strategically within sustainable limits.

Measure

Primary: Goal Level — the typical “altitude class” of chosen goals (local vs career vs large-scale) under comparable resources.

Measuring Methods

3–5 year goal trajectory profiling (goal logs / biographical interview) + choice scenarios: stability vs higher ceiling under matched starting conditions.

Empirical Anchor

Ambition / achievement motivation (McClelland, 1961); career ambition; aspiration level.

Notes

Distinct from achievement striving: ambition is about ceiling and scale; achievement striving is about measurable progress and mastery.
