Adaptive Negotiation Style

BD06 Social Interaction & Communication
Derived LayerMML-4

Version v1.2.4

Definition

The ability to switch negotiation mode (soft/firm/formal/exploratory) as counterpart and context change, without losing integrity.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

One default style used everywhere; breaks under mismatch.

High Pole

Timely, accurate style shifts that improve trajectory and outcomes.

Reference

Can adapt, but adaptation is delayed under stress or status threat.

Measure

Primary: Style Switching Accuracy — how often the chosen shift matches what objectively improves the negotiation path.

Measuring Methods

Counterpart-type scenarios → evaluate style choice + outcome improvement.

Empirical Anchor

Adaptive negotiation style / flexible conflict management (Thomas, 1976); strategic flexibility in negotiation.

Notes

A domain-specific form of flexibility—narrower than general cognitive flexibility.
