Authority Acceptance

B11 Leadership & Mentoring
Core LayerMML-2

Version v1.3.2

Definition

Willingness to recognize hierarchy and external authority: follow rules, execute leadership decisions, and treat the power structure as workable.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Authority resistance: poor hierarchy acceptance; tends to argue, resist, sabotage, or ignore “because the boss said so.”

High Pole

Accepts structure readily; follows when roles are clear and rules are coherent.

Reference

Accepts competent/fair authority, resists absurd or illegitimate power.

Measure

Disagreement threshold at which compliance breaks (or sabotage begins).

Measuring Methods

• “Order vs. rationale” scenarios → refusal point.
• Organizational observation: procedure adherence under disagreement.
• Supervisor-conflict history: frequency and style of resistance.

Empirical Anchor

Authority acceptance / right-wing authoritarianism (Altemeyer, 1981); obedience (Milgram, 1963); power distance acceptance (Hofstede, 1980).

Notes

Normative term; treat as hierarchy acceptance preference, not moral compliance.
• Distinct from fairness sensitivity (C078): one may value fairness and still accept authority, or not.
• Risks at MIN: chronic misalignment with systems.
• Risks at MAX: conformity; tolerating bad decisions.
