Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Low social anxiety: social evaluation barely triggers anxiety; the person stays calm and functional under scrutiny.
High social anxiety: evaluation triggers strong anxiety; attention shifts to “how I look,” avoidance increases and/or performance collapses.
Nervousness is present but typically tolerable; stable in familiar settings.
Measure
Measuring Methods
• Avoidance behavior audit: refusal/postponement of public acts.
• Diary: pre-event anxiety intensity.
Empirical Anchor
Notes
• Risks at MIN: underweighting reputational consequences; unfiltered bluntness.
• Risks at MAX: life and career constriction; chronic tension.
