Boundary Management Style

BD07 Empathy & Prosociality
Derived LayerMML-3

Version v1.2.4

Definition

The ability to set and adjust interpersonal distance and access rules appropriately across contexts without loss of respect.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Either porous boundaries (overreach) or rigid boundaries (isolation).

High Pole

Flexible, clear boundaries that protect resources and preserve cooperation.

Reference

Effective at work, weaker in close relationships (or the reverse).

Measure

Primary: Stability — frequency with which boundaries break down into violations, blow-ups, or burnout.

Measuring Methods

Case tracking of boundary breaches + scenario-based pressure tests; evaluate clarity of rules.

Empirical Anchor

Boundary management / work-family boundary management (Ashforth et al., 2000); interpersonal boundary setting.

Notes

Assertiveness Skill (D084) is the tool; boundary management is the broader regulation system.
