Version v1.2.4

Definition

Rapid comprehension of how unfamiliar systems work: incentives, roles, rules, and hidden mechanics.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Slow “system entry”; misreads incentives; behaves off-context.

High Pole

Quickly constructs a workable map of the system and acts effectively within it.

Reference

Learns the system after a settling-in period.

Measure

Primary: Speed (time to a workable model).
Secondary: Accuracy (model-to-reality match).

Measuring Methods

Unfamiliar system/simulation → repeated decisions → time-to-competence and prediction accuracy.

Empirical Anchor

Systems fluency / operational systems literacy; applied systems thinking in practice.

Notes

Emphasis is on entry speed; D048 emphasizes system-model depth.
