Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Very high need for closure: rushes to certainty, dislikes nuance, overcommits to early interpretations.
Low need for closure: can remain in ambiguity without distress, holding multiple hypotheses until evidence resolves.
Tolerates ambiguity in low-stakes issues, but seeks fast closure in identity- or status-relevant topics.
Measure
• Latency: time before committing to a “final” interpretation under uncertainty.
