Core LayerMML-1

Version v1.3.2

Definition

How strongly a person needs close bonds, “their people,” emotional support, and belonging as an ongoing inner requirement.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Low attachment need: autonomy and distance feel comfortable; solitude does not cause discomfort.

High Pole

High need: lack of close bond brings discomfort, anxiety, emptiness.

Reference

Closeness matters, autonomy also matters; the person can be alone without disintegration.

Measure

Discomfort intensity from lack of closeness: how poorly emotional/social distance is tolerated.

Measuring Methods

• Self-report + behavior: contact-seeking under loneliness.
• “Long-distance” scenarios → predicted and observed stability.
• Observation: speed of bond-seeking in a new environment.

Empirical Anchor

Attachment need / adult attachment (Hazan & Shaver, 1987); attachment styles (Bowlby, 1969; Bartholomew & Horowitz, 1991).

Notes

• Distinct from extraversion: attachment is about closeness/support; extraversion is about stimulation and social activity.
• Risks at MIN: emotional detachment; difficulty building intimacy.
• Risks at MAX: relationship dependence; fear of being alone.
