Poles
Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.
Status indifference: status cues have little impact; behavior changes minimally with perceived rank.
Status cues strongly shape behavior: tone, confidence, strategy, competitive vs. submissive moves.
Status is considered pragmatically (role/context) without becoming the primary lens.
Measure
Measuring Methods
• Group observation: changes in voice, initiative, deference.
• Self-report cross-checked against observation (to reduce self-deception).
Empirical Anchor
Notes
• Risks at MIN: costly disregard of real power structures.
• Risks at MAX: chronic comparison, evaluative anxiety, status-driven conflict.
