Definition

The degree to which learning consolidates into a robust, flexible capability that holds over time and transfers to new formats and contexts, rather than remaining bound to a single example, teacher, or setting.

Poles

Each HES element is a spectrum, not a category: the Low and High poles describe how it presents at its two extremes, while the Reference marks the typical, everyday middle. The poles map variation across the range — neither end is inherently better or worse.

Low Pole

Context-bound learning: performance is strong in the training context but drops sharply when conditions change (format, tools, context).

High Pole

Learning is durable and portable. The person extracts the principle and applies it across contexts, adapting the method while preserving quality.

Reference

Transfer is decent in near contexts but requires recalibration when conditions shift substantially.

Measure

Transfer index—the degree to which performance is preserved when moving from the training context to a novel context (ratio/difference of in-training vs. novel-context performance).

Measuring Methods

• Train in context A → test in context B while keeping the underlying principle constant and changing the surface features.
• Delayed retention + transfer testing.

Empirical Anchor

Transfer of learning (Thorndike & Woodworth, 1901); deep vs surface learning (Marton & Säljö, 1976); analogical transfer (Gick & Holyoak, 1983).

Notes

• Risks at MAX: overgeneralization—applying a principle where it does not fit.
• Risks at MIN: “fragile competence”: apparent mastery in one setting collapses under real-world variability.
• Differs from C007Learning Speed (fast learning by example can coexist with poor transfer, and vice versa).
